Hobart

So, we obviously started in Hobart. We stayed at a small accommodation just out of town, on Mt Nelson, beautiful views over the bay, very quiet and two lovely dogs. It's called Signalman's Cottage and I won't call it a B&B because the B for breakfast, well, I'll get back to that in a later post. Suffice to say that so far the breakfasts have been rather disappointing. Especially if you look at the prices. But hey, apart from that, everything was fine.

Hobart itself is nice, but really overhyped and a lot of the eateries in town are overpriced and overrated. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's what it is. A lot of places were also closed between Xmas and new year, so getting a table at the few cafes that were open was more or less impossible. But there are exceptions and one of them must be raved about and praised: All Thai. We went to both outlets and both times it was a fantastic dinner, best Thai food I've had outside of Asia! Wonderful! We also tried Burger Haus, and it was ok, but nothing special. The same goes for Jackman and McRoss, also ok, but nothing special. And overpriced. Hiking around Mt Wellington was nice and a good way to warm up and stretch our legs. We also went to MONA on a rainy day, and I must say, again, overhyped and overpriced. Fantastic building, some nice exhibits, but also lots of crap and boring stuff. But then I'm just a football idiot anyway, right?

We also met friends from Berlin, the world is very small indeed. And we kept bumping into each other throughout the whole trip, although neither party planned for this or even knew which route the others were taking. Very nice. ☺

Btw, I'm writing these lines having a salad in a cafe on Beefeater street. What a great name, I wish I lived in a street with such a cool name.

One last thing about Hobart. We also checked out the Tasmanian Food Festival and were again a bit disappointed... really nothing special, and given all the hype they create about it it was definitely a bit of a letdown.

All in all, a good place to get started, but not really a city that managed to win a special place in my heart. Next stop: Tasman Peninsula.
