Day 2: Auckland, Waiheke Island

After a full night's sleep the jetlag was finally gone and we set out to Waiheke island at noon. While we were waiting for the ferry I took the opportunity to test the icecream at Valentino's (in the Ferry Building) and I can recommend it to you wholeheartedly. Excellent! Waiheke island was excellent as well. It's only a cheap 30 minutes ferry ride from AKL and offer's nice & easy walkways for airplane-damaged legs. Beautiful landscape and coastline, we were almost alone on the tracks although it was saturday in the holiday season. In the afternoon even the weather played along, the clouds vanished and that's why I have to get some after-sun lotion for my burning neck right now. And some food of course. I mean lots of food since New Zealand will practically be closed for three days now with Sunday plus two public holidays coming up.

Talking of food: Burger Fuel in Parnell Rd still exists and still serves excellent burgers. The Chocolate Boutique is also still very much alive and kicking which is good news since it is the only reason I came back to New Zealand anyway. ;-)

Tomorrow it's off to the North, Paihia, to celebrate New Years Eve in the Bay of Islands. Luckily, my lovely companion has decided to accompany me there as well so I will be in good company, which is a good thing. Happy new year to all of you.

mir geht es was die Panik anbelangt wieder besser, leider hat mich so ein fieses Magen-Darm-Virus völlig ausser Gefecht gesetzt, so dass ich leider immer noch ein wenig rumeiere. Wie ich lesen konnte, hat die Bahn dich noch nicht zum aufgeben veranlasst. Tapfer- wenn auch spätestens die fehlenden dunkelhaarigen Frauen meine Motivation zu irgendwas total zerstört hätten. Skandalös, so viele Franzosen an Bord- ich dachte KLM hätte mehr Anstand!
Ich verfolge Deine (Unsere) Reise also als Blogger und wünsche Dir auf diesem Weg einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr.

 Especially since us nerds all know how dangerous Beholders can be. ;-) Ugly business, that. Some nice things: We watched "Magnus" this weekend and I was positively impressed! Gandalf the Pedophile

Driving down south to Kerikeri was beautiful: we took the time to take the scenic coastal route, visiting gazillions of beautiful beaches and inlets. Bliss and joy. KK itself is very nice of course as well, real fruit icecream, need I say more. On a rainy Saturday afternoon we went to Ngawha hot springs, which rocks totally. Basic, ramshackle pools, or rather woodclad holes in the ground with different temperatures between very hot and scorching, after one hour you have a baby's skin again. Amazing. We stayed at the very nice and highly recommendable Kerikeri Farmhostel and the reisebegleitung greatly enjoyed the Kunekune pigs they keep. Before Xmas crazyness took over the whole place we left for Whangarei Heads and that's where the old pedowizard comes in. But more of that tomorrow, I have to and eat one of the best breakfasts of all times now. Just remember: always stay with your arse to the wall when meeting old man with grey beards and pointy hats.
